Your Holiday Plans Could Be In Turmoil As Plane Crashes In France

For most, dreaming of sunning themselves to similar shades of mahogany whilst sipping piña coladas on a sandy beach is what gets them through the day. However it seems their picturesque holiday plans may be in turmoil as the harrowing news of another plane crash reaches our screens.

On Tuesday, news reached the UK of a Germanwings flight headed to Barcelona from Dϋsseldorf which crashed in the French Alps. The devastating tragedy left 150 passengers onboard the airbus dead.

Ria Gowers, 18, is due to fly to Thailand on Saturday and the news has made her anxious about her exotic trip away. “I was so excited to leave, I already have all of my bags packed and ready to go but as soon as I saw the news I was filled with dread. Dread for all of the poor families who have been told their loved ones are lost and dread at the thought of flying. I’ve had my trip planned since last year and all of my excitement has turned to nerves.”

The Germanwings flight crash is joining an apparent growing list of crashes. Last June saw the disappearance of Maylaysian Arilinesflight 370, the most recent large plane crash. Following an investigation, officials declared all 239 passengers onboard the aircraft dead. Following this in December 2014 an Air Asia plane crashed in to the Java Sea killing 162 people.

Becky Uren, 22, flight attendant for 3 years for BA Cityflyer, said:" I don't worry about when I hear about plane crashes as I know it's so very rare for it to happen. I'm more likely to have a crash driving on the way to work than be in a plane accident! All cabin crew are trained on emergency landings and situations and we have recurrent training every year. We also sit exams to make sure that we know exactly what to do if an emergency was to occur on board."
In 2015 alone there have been 17 crashes, according to the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives (BAAA).  However the statistics show that the amount of plane crashes has reduced; 1944 saw the most reported crashes with 906, compared to 2014, which saw 120. From 1990 to 2015 there have been a staggering 5,110 plane crashes (BAAA).

Uren said: "For anyone who is worried about flying, I'd reassure them that everyone who works on board is very highly trained to deal with any emergency situations that could occur and also remind them how rare it is for a plane to crash or have any faults that could endanger anyone's safety. Think about how many flights leave every day and yes there may have been a few that have come up on the news in the last year but this is still a tiny, tiny percentage."
