Bloggers Reveal Their Secrets On How To Make Money From YouTube

With her first book, Girl Online, breaking records, her make-up line a success and not one, but two Radio 1 Teen Awards under her belt, Zoe ‘Zoella’ Suggs is the definition of YouTube success story. But how easy is it for your everyday girl interested in beauty and fashion to make a career out of filming herself talking all things girly?

Following the success of YouTube mega stars Zoe Suggs, Alfie Deynes and Tanya Burr, who have reportedly made a mint from the site, others have dipped their feet into the world of video. Barbara Rossi, 21, set up her YouTube account ‘ThePersianBabe’ as a way to document her fashion and inspire other girls. “I remember spending hours watching girls applying makeup and trying on clothes and thought to myself: could I do that? So I decided I would just give it a go and hope for the best. I didn't think I would ever make it my job, it all started as just a hobby.”

It isn’t just regular uploaders which earn cash from YouTube. One-off clips which go viral such as the famous the “Charlie Bit Me – Again!” video showing the mischievous one-year-old nibbling on his brother’s finger. The clip received 800 million views and boy’s father made over £100,000 from advertising.

Sarah Ashcroft, "That Pommie Girl", has 17,096 subscribers to her YouTube channel.

For Rossi, YouTube was just a bit of fun but she soon began receiving products to trial and clothing in the post. "It was quite surreal that brands I'd always loved and purchased from were sending little ol' me things for my opinion,” she says. “Making money from YouTube was never my intention but whilst studying it has been such a great extra source of money whilst doing something I genuinely enjoy."

Similarly to Ross, Sarah Ashcroft, started out with her blog That PommieGirl and decided to venture in to YouTube, and created her own channel. "I started out in a marketing PR job and as a little side hobby set up my little blog and suddenly, before I knew it I was gaining followers really quickly and so I decided that I might try my hand at making my own YouTube videos.”

The scheme is partnered with Google Adsense to monetise videos using adverts. Those 30 second adverts you have to watch at the beginning of YouTube videos can be the most lucrative and the amount of subscribers, views and people who click on the adverts all add into the process of earning.

Social Blade, a website which collects data from YouTubers and collates them so you can find out how much your favourite channels are estimated to earn. For example, Zoella reportedly earns on estimate £4.1K - £65.4K per month, according to Social Blade.

"YouTube contacted me asking whether I would like to become part of their advertising scheme. It basically means that you allow adverts to be placed in and around your channel and you get some of the money they make,” explained Ashcroft. “It’s really simple and pretty fab."
